The Beginning: 1965
The story of Subway began in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1965. It was founded by Fred DeLuca, a 17-year-old college student, and Dr. Peter Buck, a family friend and nuclear physicist. DeLuca was looking for a way to pay for his college education, and Buck suggested that he open a submarine sandwich shop. He even provided an initial investment of $1,000 to help DeLuca get started.
The original name of the restaurant was “Pete’s Super Submarines”, reflecting Dr. Buck’s involvement and the core product they intended to sell: submarine sandwiches.
Early Challenges and Growth
The first shop opened in August 1965, and the team quickly realized they needed to learn a lot about the food industry. In the beginning, sales were modest, and both founders made several mistakes along the way. However, they used those early setbacks as learning experiences.
By 1966, they formed a company named Doctor’s Associates Inc., not because of any medical affiliation, but to represent the goal: Fred becoming a doctor and Pete being a physicist. That same year, they opened their second location, solidifying their belief that a chain of sandwich shops could be successful.
In 1968, the name of the business was officially changed to “Subway”, which was shorter, more memorable, and better suited for branding as the company began to expand.
Franchising Begins: 1974
After operating several stores on their own, DeLuca and Buck decided to grow the brand through franchising. The first franchised Subway restaurant opened in Wallingford, Connecticut in 1974. This marked a turning point for the business, as franchising allowed them to expand rapidly across the United States.
